Scattered data was a nightmare to report on for SLANG Worldwide

SLANG Worldwide, the industry leader in cannabis consumer packaged goods, had data scattered across different systems, including Salesforce, Xero, Shopify, and eight MySQL databases. They struggled with querying their data because it wasn’t connected in one central location. On top of that, not all their data was easily accessible. Some could only be accessed through an API, while others could only be accessed through the system’s reporting feature.

The finance team supplied reporting for nearly all departments and was responsible for executive reporting. One executive report, known internally as the dossier, was particularly important. Most departments looked at the dossier to understand how the business is doing each month.

Putting the dossier together was incredibly difficult and time-consuming. “It’s a nightmare if you look at it from a data perspective because each of our business units all have different data sources, and a lot of them are a combination of MySQL connecting to Salesforce. Two of them are MySQL only, and I’m also going to be adding a data source from Shopify,” said Kate White, ERP System Administrator at SLANG Worldwide.

With Mozart, I’m able to — and this is one of the few things that makes me truly happy — get in and write one query with all those different data sources. And then at the top, it just looks like one report.”

To overcome their data nightmare, SLANG implemented Mozart Data. Mozart’s data warehouse stores all their data in one place and makes it easier to report on. “Instead of writing multiple queries to combine data, “With Mozart, I’m able to — and this is one of the few things that makes me truly happy — get in and write one query with all those different data sources. And then at the top, it just looks like one report,” said White.

“Before we had Mozart, everything was so hard. If we had to report on something new, it was terrible,” explained White. “A single report request took so much longer in the old system. We might be able to accomplish it, but it took orders of magnitude longer to accomplish the same thing,” confirmed Mike Ogden, Director, Business Systems at SLANG Worldwide. “Now we get a request and if it’s ‘I need to see this, I’ve got to slice and dice it this way, and it needs to include all business units,’ it’s surprising how quickly we can roll that out.”

Making data accessible to all while keeping costs down

Although SLANG was initially looking to integrate all its data, they’ve realized many additional benefits of using Mozart Data’s out-of-the-box modern data stack. “One of the benefits of the integrated data that I don’t know I would have articulated when we first entered into this relationship [with Mozart Data] is that we’re able to keep things affordable from an overall business systems footprint standpoint,” said Ogden.

SLANG was at a point where more people wanted access to data. But if they added each person to these systems, their costs would have quickly gone up. With Mozart Data and Klipfolio, a business intelligence tool, everyone can view the data they want without having to get access to the different business systems. “If you just need access to look at data, we can save some money by not having them have to go into these different platforms,” said Ogden.

Now, Ogden believes they can put off giving people access indefinitely and maybe even forever. “When people aren’t really using the operational systems, but they have to get in there and run reports, that’s an expensive seat to give up just for that purpose.”

Increasing trust and becoming the data superstars of SLANG

Since implementing Mozart Data, the finance team has seen a shift within the company. A snowball effect occurred, where they’re now getting more requests than ever. “Once they start seeing what we can deliver, they get ideas. As we’ve rolled some of these things out, the requests have just gushed in now,” said Ogden.

White has also seen an increased trust in the finance team. Prior to Mozart Data, all the components for a query were in different places. White described, “We would try and build something. We would do our very best. We would vet it as best we could. Then, it would break. I think it was a combination of our speed, our ability to be responsive and nimble to what people wanted and needed, and the load we were placing on the technology was all too much. So people didn’t ask for much because they didn’t trust in our ability to give that to them.”

This changed when they started using Mozart Data. “Now they ask for a thing, I can turn it around quickly, and they say, ‘Great, how about another thing?’”

White works closely with the sales team. The list of requests she gets from one of their sales managers gets longer every time and she loves it. The sales manager sees the possibilities of what can now be done with data and that the finance team can now deliver it.

Simplifying data processes, management, and reporting

If there were any dashboard or BI tools that SLANG’s departments wanted to use, the first question they always had to ask was “Does it connect to the various data sources we have?” They no longer have to worry about this because they just need to make sure it can connect to Mozart Data now.

The value of Mozart Data goes beyond connecting data sources to a business intelligence tool though. Shopify and Xero can connect directly to Klipfolio. “But they connect, I think, in JSON, which is not something I have any experience with,” said White. “I don’t have a tech background. Mike taught me SQL my first month of the job. So getting everything into a relational database, I just have to be an expert in one thing — forget the rest of it. I don’t have to go out and learn all the ways that data can be matched.”

Not having to learn any new languages or be able to write code is extremely important because SLANG doesn’t have an IT department. Although many applications offer an API, “What you buy into when you have to integrate technically with an API, it’s not worth it unless you’ve got a development staff,” said Ogden. And even when you do have developers, Ogden questions if it’s worth it. Because Mozart Data manages all data connectors, SLANG doesn’t need to troubleshoot errors or update APIs when vendors update them.

Mozart Data is our permanent data mart that we’re going to be using for reporting, and it’s going to give us the agility to do migrations in a way we wouldn’t have if we were connecting directly to these different platforms or sources.”

For SLANG, Mozart Data isn’t a short-term stopgap. “It is our permanent data mart that we’re going to be using for reporting, and it’s going to give us the agility to do migrations in a way we wouldn’t have if we were connecting directly to these different platforms or sources,” said Ogden.
